Job Summary:

Would you like to practice your public speaking skills? As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service, you deliver interpretive programs to educate visitors. You independently present a variety of talks and briefings and respond to visitor questions. Your presentations are generally short and concern park orientation and visitor safety. You explain the area's natural, cultural and/or historic resources, recreational opportunities, concession facilities and services, availability of campgrounds and hiking trails. You provide information on current park events, projects, and policies, as well as updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. Park guides work in or near the park visitor center or visitor contact station, and at auditoriums, campgrounds, trails, or in the field. Other duties may include visitor services such as fee collection, traffic control, back-country patrols, and administrative tasks. The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to 2 temporary positions at Flagstaff Area Monuments. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for extension if workload and funding allow. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2013 Flagstaff Area National Monuments consists of Walnut Canyon NM, Sunset Crater Volcano NM and Wupatki NM. This position is located at Wupatki NM, approximately 35 miles (60 minute drive) from Flagstaff, Arizona (a city with a population of around 55,000 and an elevation of 7,000 ft). Walnut Canyon is 8 miles east of Flagstaff, Sunset Crater Volcano is 8 miles north of Flagstaff and Wupatki is about 35 miles north of Flagstaff. Summers in Flagstaff are warm with temperatures in the 80's and frequent monsoon thunderstorms. Winters are cold, with low temperatures near zero and snow averaging around 90 inches. Flagstaff offers complete medical, dental and shopping services, along with excellent educational opportunities at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. The surrounding desert, mountains and lakes provide varied recreational opportunities. Finding affordable housing/rentals in Flagstaff can be challenging and may be limited. The incumbent may be required to work any of the Flagstaff Monuments and provide their own transportation.
